I share my story because just like so many others, abortion is a normal and lifesaving medical procedure that helped me during one of the most difficult moments of my life. We all need access to abortion care. 

Abortion Advice: Consult with the people who love you, but at the end of the day, that choice is yours and you have an amazing network to support whatever decision you make. 

How I honor my abortion: I consider my abortion to be a miracle and I am grateful for the ability to make that decision.

What I wish people knew about abortion: People should have the freedom of bodily autonomy to make the decisions that are best for themselves and no one has a right to take that away from you.

“I was not in a situation where I could afford even a $50 increase, much less one of a couple hundred dollars,” Gomez explains. “And I needed a ride, so I was at the mercy of the person who impregnated me [and] was abusive. I was on his schedule and if [it] did not line up correctly, it wasn’t going to happen. And I said that I was not going to be pregnant. I didn’t want to be pregnant.”

US Abortion Deserts Where Women Have Been Stripped of Rights

The US is dotted with so-called “abortion deserts,” areas where people have to drive over 100 miles (160 kilometers) to reach the nearest clinic. These spaces have spread with the coronavirus crisis, leaving millions of women in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee stripped of their right to choose.
