I share my story because I love everyone who has had abortions and I want them to know they're not alone no matter what led them to their decision.
Abortion Advice: Whether or not you need help paying for your procedure and/or getting to your appointment(s), get to know your state's abortion funds! They offer resources, support, and community for anyone seeking an abortion.
How I honor my abortion: I honor my abortion by no longer giving a shit about what people will think if they know I've had an abortion (that goes for friends AND family). I have spent way too much of my life trying to please people. I love my abortion and I will remain unapologetic because it was the best decision I've ever made.
What I wish people knew about abortion: I wish I would have known that the shame that I felt after my abortion was due to harmful restrictions in Texas that are put in place to stigmatize abortion, not because I did anything wrong. From the moment I found out I was pregnant I knew I didn't want to have a child. And almost 5 years later, I have NEVER regretted my abortion. But it took me a long time to reclaim my sense of self because the patriarchal society tells us that our bodies are not ours. And if you're worried about what your family will think of you, don't feel like you have to share it with them. Because there's a whole community of beautiful people who will affirm you and make you feel loved for doing what's best for yourself.
What is your favorite abortion on TV? "Little Woods" directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Tessa Thompson. It's such a powerful film that provides an accurate depiction of some of the more invisible obstacles to abortion care that mostly impact rural communities and folks who have been incarcerated.
